Chicago, City of Surprises

Published January 11, 2018 in Air Shows, Travel

The Chicago Air and Water Show was the main reason why we were in Chicago, specifically that week in August 2017. When we were planning our trip to the USA, I read online that the Blue Angels would be there. I had only ever seen them on television, and I jumped at the opportunity to take in their flying with my own eyes. All the airshows I had ever attended before Chicago were at airports in South Africa. The experience included a scorching African sun baking down on the dusty tarmac, sometimes tempered a little by the fact that it […]

Six years ago when we visited Amsterdam, one of the highlights of our trip was eating poffertjes. Poffertjes are Dutch Pancakes, baked using a special cast iron pan. Typically they are served with powdered sugar and butter. But anything sweet will go well with them, including fruit and cream and chocolate sauce. And ever since we have been searching for the perfect poffertjes in South Africa. And now the search is over! 😀 Today we visited The Stalls night market at the South Downs shopping center in Centurion. The whole market concept is great – lots of different food stalls […]

South African Food

Published August 25, 2016 in Food, South Africa

I have travelled to many places around the world. I have had some wonderful meals – fantastic curry dishes in India, amazing pasta in Italy, and great tapas in Spain. It is very much a part of the experience of travelling to eat the local food! It does require finding out what the local food actually is however. Everywhere in the world there are Indian and French and Italian restaurants. Fast food chains serving our favourite burgers and pizzas are ubiquitous. And South Africa is no different. So today I want to tell you about three restaurants in Gauteng that […]

Almost Like Being in Space

Published August 1, 2014 in Travel

As far back as I can remember, I have been facinated by everything about space. I have a whole shelf full of astronomy books, some of which I have had since primary school. And to this very day, my dream job is being an astronaut! So it was just natural when my hubby and I visited the USA that we would fit in as many space related places as we could. 🙂 Kennedy Space Centre We spent a whole day at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida in 2012, and we loved every minute of it! Trust me, one day […]

Thailand Recommendations

Published June 11, 2014 in Travel

Thailand is a country with a wonderful culture and stunning beaches. And it is a remarkably affordable destination. Small wonder that many South Africans choose to visit Thailand. Two groups of friends recently independently asked me what is worthwhile seeing while you are there, so I decided to share what I enjoyed most. Grand Palace in Bangkok I think that it is worthwhile spending a few days in Bangkok sightseeing. And one of the most spectacular sights to see is the Grand Palace. The palace is actually a whole complex of buildings, and one can spend hours there without seeing […]

We stayed at the Aloe Ridge Hotel this weekend. This morning I woke up to the sound of automatic gun fire in the distance. And I knew that it meant another day of filming of the movie Seal Team 8! 😀 Can’t wait to see the movie!

Elephants are such amazing creatures! I realised again just how true that is when we recently visited the Elephant Sanctuary at Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa. It was an amazing experience to feed them, walk with them, and even ride on the elephants!
