Spiritual Diet
The Banting diet has become quite popular. Many restaurants serve Banting meals as a part of their menu. Even some fast food places that I would never have expected to serve anything carbohydrate free, have jumped on the bandwagon. And so I decided to read about William Banting (1796 – 1878), the guy that first popularised this diet.
“In 1863, Banting wrote a booklet called Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public which contained the particular plan for the diet he followed. It was written as an open letter in the form of a personal testimonial.” – Wikipedia
Banting himself followed this diet, and it worked for him. In fact, it worked so well that he decided that he has to share it with the world. His booklet is apparently still in print after all these years. So you can read for yourself what he wrote. And of course many others have studied this and published all kinds on information on this diet. So if you wanted to, you could find enough material to study on this subject that you could become an expert in the field.
You can read about it as much as you like. However, if you don’t DO the same things that Banting did, nothing will change!
I am no expert on nutrition. So I am neither recommending nor arguing against the Banting diet. But I do know about a spiritual diet that works – the Jesus diet!
Jesus showed us the perfect example of how to live when He was on earth.
John 13:12-15 (WEBBE): 12So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am. 14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have given you an example, that you should also do as I have done to you.
Jesus didn’t eat spiritual junk food – He lived by the words out of God’s mouth.
Matthew 4:4 (WEBBE): 4But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’ ”
We can study Jesus’ life and ministry in a lot of detail. There is all of the Bible to read. And many books and blog posts and audio teachings based on that. We can study so much that we can be considered expert theologians. However, if we don’t DO what Jesus did, nothing will change!
