Devotion

Do you personally know somebody that has devoted an entire lifetime to some pursuit, maybe music or cycling or cooking? Somebody that eats, sleeps and breathes their passion. After a lifetime of study and practice, it is possible to know just about EVERYTHING worth knowing, and its connections to everything else in life become apparent too. I am talking about somebody that LOVES doing what they have mastered.

If you know somebody like that, then you will know that they can (and do!) connect just about ANY topic of conversation to their chosen field of expertise. When they open their mouths, out of them pours what they have put into themselves over the years.

If this is true in the natural world, then surely it also holds true in our spiritual lives.

Luke 6:45 (WEBBE): 45The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

So what resources do we have to live a life devoted to God? Jesus gave some excellent advice:

John 8:31-32 (WEBBE): 31Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

If we spend time with the Word, putting it into our minds and hearts, then in that process our minds will be renewed.

Romans 12:2 (WEBBE): 2Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Having a renewed mind filled with the Word means that we can connect whatever topic of conversation to the Word of God. Illness? There is a scripture for that. Wild fires? There is a scripture for that. Celebrating a wedding? There is a scripture for that.

On a practical level, I have found that the important thing is to constantly keep on renewing your mind. If you stop reading the Bible or spending time with God for even just a few days, something else will fill that time slot and will occupy your mind instead. And then you would have to make the decision all over again to devote time to God.

So make time for God every single day this week. And you will soon see that you start thinking about life in a different way!
