Finding Peace in the Hustle and Bustle

I have a to-do list that is about a mile long. No, it actually has mile markers, so it is even longer than that… There are lots of small chores that I have to get done today. Some other things that I have been putting off, that I have to get around to. A few huge projects that will take months that I should start with soon. And then there are the things that I would actually like to do, that I haven’t had time for in too long.

Does that sound familiar?

Where can we possibly find peace in all of that frantic activity?

Psalm 46:1 (WEBBE): 1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Whether our trouble is some big, scary event or simply an overload of daily activities, God is our refuge! We can find peace in the loving arms of our Father God. Rest assured that He loves you just as much whether your house is sparkling from top to bottom, or looks like a tornado hit it. He loves you just as much whether that big project at work is a huge success or a complete failure.

So how do we actually, practically do this? The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 comes to mind. Martha was running around doing all kinds of things, while Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to what He was saying. The way to experience God’s peace is to stop, for even just a moment, to listen to His voice. To experience His loving presence. Whether it is taking a moment to appreciate the God-created beauty of a flower, or listening to a song, or simply being quiet, we need to decide to make the time. The world won’t understand – it will complain just as loudly as Martha. But trust me, it is worthwhile doing!
